German vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and Umlaute (ä, ö, ü) can either be spoken short or long.
In the following list you will hear for every vowel three short spoken followed by three long spoken examples. Click "play all" to listen and compare!
The last four words have a "y". It does not belong to the German vowels, but it is used as one and pronounced like an "ü". The "y" is spoken short in "Rhythmus" and "Labyrinth" and long in "typisch" and "anonym".
