Different pronunciation of German vowel "e" short and lon spoken, and "ä".
The e-vowel spoken short sounds like the Umlaut "ä": lips and lower jaw are more relaxed.

The long e-vowel needs more tension, the mouth is wider, almost in a smile.

Click "play all" and listen- in every column you will hear 3 short e-sounds, followed by 3 "ä"-sounds and then 3 long e-sounds.

Check the translations later by using mouse-overs.
